Kaifiyat Express derails in Uttar Pradesh’s Auriya district, 50 injured

Kaifiyat Express, travelling from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh to Delhi, collided with a dumper at around 2:50am between Pata and Achhalda railway stations, injuring 50

New Delhi: A sand dumper trespassing railway tracks in Auriya district of Uttar Pradesh caused derailment of Kaifiyat Express on the intervening night of 22 and 23 August, injuring around 50 people, according to initial reports. The accident derailed nine coaches of the Delhi-bound train.

This is second rail derailment in Uttar Pradesh in the last three days. On Saturday-Sunday intervening night, Utkal Express had derailed in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, killing 22 passengers and injuring 156.

Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said the train was travelling from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh to Delhi when it collided with a dumper around 2.50am between Pata and Achhalda railway stations. One of the bogies of the train overturned which impacted the other bogies, causing their derailment.

He said various departments will conduct their own inquiries. “Since it was a dumper which had collided due to trespassing, the local police would be investigating the matter and booking the dumper owner and the driver. Similarly, railways has also initiated its inquiry if there was any lapses on our part," Saxena added.

Senior railway ministry officials along with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and a medical train have rushed to the site to carry out rescue operations and provide support to the victims.

Railway minister Suresh Prabhu around 5am sent 3 tweets attaching a news item of Indian Express about the accident. The tweets said, “A dumper hit the locomotive of the Kaifiyat Express resulting in derailment of coaches."

“Some passengers have received injuries and have shifted to nearby hospitals. I am personally monitoring situation, rescue operations."

“Have directed senior officers to reach the site immediately."

The ministry of railways in its bulletin said several trains have been diverted and cancelled due to the accident.
