TDP leader's gunman fires into air, Nandyal tense post by poll

The peaceful atmosphere in Nandyal town was shattered when the private gunman of Telugu Desam Party leader Abhiruchi Madhu fired five rounds into the air from his service revolver when few YSR Congress activists pelted stones on their convoy on Thursday. Nandyal assembly segment in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh went for by-poll on Wednesday and the counting is slated for 28 August.

According to reports, the attack occurred when the YSRCP leader Bhuma Chakrapani who was on his way to offer condolences to a local YSRC leader Bhasha at his residence in Salim Nagar. When the convoy reached Suraj Grand Hotel, TDP cadre allegedly picked up a fight with the supporters of Shilpa Mohan Reddy and his brother Chakrapani Reddy. Within seconds both sides started pelting stones in which Madhu’s car is partly damaged. Even as Madhu picked up a machete and started wielding it, the gunman fired into the air to disperse the YSRC supporters. However, no one is injured in the firing. The police have imposed 144 section in the town.

Meanwhile, YSRC MLA Srikanth Reddy reacting to the incident alleged that the TDP has unleashed terror following the massive turnout on Wednesday confirming party’s victory. He even alleged that the firing was done to eliminate Chakrapani Reddy. “Why didn’t the TDP leader deposit his fire arm to the authorities as per code of conduct,” he asked. On the other hand state Tourism minister Bhuma Akhila Priya said that TDP knows how to protect its cadre and YSRC’s efforts to create terror in Nandyal will not be tolerated.

It was only on Wednesday that the Nandyal police upon the directions of the EC to the returning officer booked cases against YS Jaganmohan Reddy under sections 188,504 and 506 (IPC) and under section 125 of People’s Representation Act for his comments on Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu during the campaign.
