Bypoll results highlights: AAP wins Bawana, BJP wins Goa seats, TDP wins Nandyal

Bypoll results LIVE: AAP looks likely to retain Bawana. Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar won Panaji bypoll elections.

Goa Chief Minister and BJP leader Manohar Parrikar won a sixth term as MLA after winning Panaji bypoll, defeating Congress’ Girish Chodankar by a margin of 4803 votes. The party tasted success in Valpoi too with Vishwajit Rane, Health minister, defeating Congress’ Roy Naik by a huge margin of 10,066 votes. In Bawana, after an initial close contest between Congress and AAP, the latter took the lead and went on to register a strong victory by over 24000 votes. BJP, who was trailing behind both the parties in the beginning rounds, picked up votes in the final few rounds and ended at second place with a lead of 3915 votes over Congress.

TDP candidate B Brahmananda Reddy won Nandyal Assembly seat in Andhra Pradesh, defeating YSR Congress rival S Mohan Reddy by over 27000 votes. Earlier, both the regional parties received zero postal votes. Out of 250 postal ballot votes, 39 were declared invalid and 211 NOTA. It meant both TDP and YSRCP did not poll a single vote in the postal ballots.

5:00 pm: Speaking after winning the Bawana bypoll, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal said that his party MLAs can not be bought. He said: “AAP ke vidhayak jis mitti ke bane hain, inhe khareeda nahi jaa sakta”, ANI reported.

*Following a string of poll defeats in recently, the Aam Aadmi Party redeemed some lost pride by comfortably retaining the Bawana Assembly constituency in Delhi. The AAP recorded a resounding victory, leaping way ahead of the BJP and the Congress. Ram Chander, the AAP candidate, secured 59,886 votes while the BJP finished a distant second with 35, 834 votes. Congress candidate Surender Kumar trailed closely behind with 31, 919 votes.

*The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh won the Nandyal Assembly by-election comfortably with a huge margin of 27,466 votes. TDP candidate Bhuma Brahmananda Reddy thumped his YSR Congress rival and former minister Silpa Chandra Mohan Reddy. While Bhuma bagged 97, 076 votes, his rival secured 69, 610. The Nandyal by-election was necessitated following the death of TDP MLA Bhuma Nagi Reddy in March.

*In Goa, the BJP emerged with flying colors, winning the by-elections to two assembly seats in the coastal state. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar won from Panaji while health minister Vishwajit Rane from Valpoi. The victories assumed significance for the saffron party as it does not enjoy a majority on its own in the 40-member assembly.

3:05 pm: Congress candidate Surender Kumar ended up in third spot despite leading in the first 11 rounds of counting in the Bawana bypoll.

1:36 pm: TDP candidate B Brahmananda Reddy won Nandyal Assembly seat in Andhra Pradesh, defeating YSR Congress rival S Mohan Reddy by over 27000 votes.

1:20 pm: AAP’s Ram Chander registers victory in Bawana bypolls by 24052 votes. BJP’s Ved Prakash is in second place followed by Congress’ Surender Kumar. Final tally: AAP- 59886, BJP-35834, Congress-31919.

1:18 pm: The counting of votes in Bawana has entered the final round and AAP is leading by 24052 votes. The winner of Bawana bypoll will be announced shortly.

1:13 pm: With two more rounds of counting still to go, AAP has taken an insurmountable lead of 24662 votes over BJP’s Ved Prakash, who is currently at second position. Current tally in round 27 is at AAP- 59844, BJP- 35782, Congress- 31881.

1:06 pm: AAP’s candidate Ram Chander with 58209 votes is projected to win Bawana bypoll in Delhi. BJP’s Ved Prakash is at second position with 34501 votes, followed by Congress’ Surender Kumar 30758 in round 26 of counting.

1:00 pm: In Nandyal, TDP is leading by 26262 votes ahead of YSRCP candidate. Current tally- TDP: 81892, YSR- 55630.

12:50 pm: AAP extends lead in Bawana bypolls by 23132 votes in round 25. BJP is in the second place, leading over Congress by 3595 votes. Current tally- AAP: 56178, BJP- 33046; Congress- 29451

12:45 pm: AAP extends its lead by 22401 votes in Bawana bypolls in round 24 of counting. BJP leader Ved Prakash extended his lead over Congress Surender Kumar by 2430 votes.

12:40 pm: Run up to Bawana bypolls: On the day of Bawana bypoll elections, a war of words broke out between AAP and BJP over an “objectionable and communal” poster purportedly bearing a message from Delhi Minorities minister Imran Hussain. 12:35 pm: Run up to Bawana bypolls: During the campaign running up to Bawana bypoll, Delhi BJP President Manoj Tiwari was allegedly attacked with “stones” and “Sharpened woods”. According to a BJP spokesperson, “A little while ago, stones and a piece of sharpened wood were thrown at Manoj Tiwari while he was on stage. 12:25 pm: AAP has taken a lead of 20130 votes in Bawana bypolls. In an interesting turn, BJP candidate Ved Prakash has now taken lead over Congress’ Surender Kumar by 640 votes in round 22. Current tally: AAP: 48366, BJP, 28236, Congress- 27596.

12:15 pm: TDP is currently leading in Nandyal by over 20000 votes in round 12. Current tally is at: TDP- 65081, YSRCP – 43240.

12:05 pm: In round 21 of counting, AAP has extended its lead by 20464 votes over Congress. Meanwhile BJP has closed down the margin on Congress and is just 684 behind Congress now. Current tally: AAP- 47554, 27090, 26406.

11:55 am: After round 20, AAP has extended over Congress’ Surender Kumar by 17057 votes. Current tally is at AAP: 45688; BJP- 26559; Congress- 25099.

11:50 am: AAP has extended its lead over Congress by 17057 votes. Current tally is at AAP: 42942, Congress- 25885, BJP- 23949 in 19th round. Still 9 rounds of counting to go, but it still seems unlikely that any party can take over AAP now.

11:45 am: AAP’s Ram Chander has taken a lead of 15215 votes ahead of Congress Ram Chander in Bawana bypoll. Current tally is at AAP- 40402, Congress- 25187, BJP- 22750.

11:40 am: After 10 rounds of counting in Nandyal bypoll, TDP’s B Brahmananda Reddy is leading over YSRCP with a margin of 19,706. TDP: 59452, YSRCP- 35469

11:25 am: In round 17, AAP has extended its lead and is currently ahead of Congress by 12230 votes. Current tally is at AAP: 36878; BJP: Surender Kumar- 24648; BJP- 21992.

11:17 am: AAP’s candidate Ram Chander has taken a strong lead of 10917 votes over Congress’ Surender Kumar in Round 16. Current tally is at AAP: 34653, Congress: 23736, BJP: 21378.

11:15 am: A note on BJP candidate for Bawana bypoll election Ved Prakash: Ved Prakash is a former AAP legislator from Bawana. He was announced as BJP’s candidate by Delhi BJP President Manoj Tiwari in June. He resigned from his seat on Monday and joined BJP. Before joining AAP during 2015 Assembly elections, Prakash was a BJP member.

11:10 am: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Vishwajit Rane for winning bypolls in Goa. In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Congrats to @manoharparrikar & @visrane for the impressive wins in Panaji & Valpoi respectively. I thank the people of Goa for their support.”

11:00 am: With TDP candidate leading in Bhuma Brahmananda Reddy leads over YSRCP with a huge margin, TDP workers came out on streets to celebrate in Nandyal.

10:55 am: There is a close contest going on in Bawana, where AAP and Congress continues to overtake each other at different points. The counting has entered round 13, and AAP’s Ram Chander has taken a lead of over 2000 votes ahead of Congress’ Surender Kumar. BJP is currently trailing behind with 18041 votes. Current tally is at AAP: 25374, Surender Kumar, 22465, Ved Parkash: 18041.

10:45 am: Before the bypoll elections in Bawana, AAP leaders said the Gorakhpur hospital tragedy, where over 60 children died due to encephalitis, will affect the voter’s mindset in the district. 10:37 am: Congress has again regained lead in Bawana in round 11. Cong’s Surender Kumar is leading with a margin of over 129 votes over AAP’s Ram Chander, while BJP candidate Ved Prakash is trailing behind with 15346 votes. Current tally is at Congress – 20914, AAP- 20785, BJP- 15346.

10:20 am: After six rounds of counting in Nandyal bypoll, TDP has taken a lead of 16465 votes. Current tally is at TDP: 37278; YSR- 20813.

9:56 am: BJP’s Vishwajit Rane wins bye-election from Valpoi by a margin of 10,066 votes.

9:52 am: TDP’s B Brahmananda Reddy has established lead of over 9000 votes in Nandyal. Currently tally is at TDP – 24162, YSRCP – 14492.

9:50 am: In Valpoi, BJP’s Vishwajit P Rane is leading with 14684 votes, while Congress’ Roy Naik is trailing behind at 5387 votes after 3rd round of voting.

9:45 am: After six rounds of counting, Congress candidate Surender Kumar is leading in Bawana by a margin of 3437 votes, reports ANI. The tally stands at Congress 13182, BJP 9745, AAP 9499.

9:43 am: Speaking to reporters after winning Panajui bypoll, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar says he will resign from Rajya Sabha next week.

9:01 am: In an update, ANI reported that Manohar Parrikar has taken a lead of over 2500 votes in Panaji bypoll with 4290 votes in the first round. Congress candidate Girish Raya Chodankar is trailing behind with 2252 votes.

9:00 am: As per recent updates by ANI on Bawana bypolls, Congress candidate Surender Kumar has taken a lead of over 300 votes with 3796 votes after 2nd round. AAP is currently trailing behind at 3451 votes, while BJP is at 3154 votes.

8:55 am: In Nandyal bypoll elections, 39 out of 250 votes were declared invalid, ANI reported. In postal ballots, no votes for YSRCP or TDP.

8:53 am: Valpoi bypolls Round 1 Results: Congress 1576, BJP 5395. BJP’s Vishwajit Rane leads is leading with 5395 votes against Congress’ Roy Naik who is at 1576 votes.

8:50 am: News agency ANI is reporting that Congress candidate Surender Kumar is leading with 2108 votes in first round, while AAP’s Ram Chander is at 1906 and BJP is at 1687 votes.

8:47 am:  Meanwhile, in Bawana, Congress is leading by 350 votes, according to senior leader Ajay Maken.

8:45 am: Panaji, Valpoi by-poll counting: In Panaji, BJP’s Manohar Parrikar gets 4290 votes, Congress’ Girish Chodankar gets 2252 votes, GSM gets 96 in 1st round.

8:40 am: According to latest updates, Goa Chief Manohar Parrikar is leading by 2022 votes in the Round 1 in Panaji by-poll election.

8:30 am: In Goa, Parrikar, who assumed office of Chief Minister in March after resigning from the post of Defence Minister, is contesting against Congress’ Roy Naik. Because Parrikar was not an elected MLA in the state, he had to get elected within the first six months after taking charge as CM to continue office.

8:20 am: Counting of votes starts for Nandyal Assembly constituency by-pol. Counting started at Government Polytechnic College.

7:45 am: Eight candidates are in contention for Bawana by-election but AAP’s Ram Chandra will take on BJP’s Ved Prakash and Congress’ Surendra Kumar, a former 3-time MLA from Bawana.

7:40 am: According to senior poll officials, counting of votes will begin at 8 am. The results are likely to be announced in three hours after the counting starts.
