Bihar, UP battle flood fury

In Uttar Pradesh, five more persons died on Sunday in the flood related incidents in Uttar Pradesh, taking the toll to 101 in the state.

One flood-related death was reported from Lakhimpur Kheri, while four deaths from Gorakhpur. However the number of flood-affected districts has reduced from 24 to 14. At present, as many as 3,128 villages are flood-affected, while the number of marooned villages stands at 2,061. A number of people have taken shelter in various relief camps.

The flood situation in Assam registered a marked improvement, although over 1.6 lakh people were still suffering across six districts of the north-eastern state. The third wave of floods has so far claimed the lives of 73 people across Assam and the total number of deaths in flood-related incidents this year stood at 157 in the state.

In West Bengal, the flood waters had receded from most of the places of the six affected districts in the northern parts of the state as the toll remained static at 90. The improvement was aided by little or no rainfall over the last few days in Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, Cooch Behar and Malda districts. Nearly 59 lakh people were affected by the flood in the state.
