3 arrested with 5,000 cough syrup bottles in Sambalpur of Odisha

SAMBALPUR: At least 5,040 codeine laced cough syrup bottles were seized and three persons arrested by Sambalpur Police on Tuesday while the contraband was being transported from Chhattisgarh to Bhubaneswar in a private bus.

The accused are Milan Parija (35) of Kanakpur under Tirtol police limits in Jagatsinghpur district; conductor of the bus, Manoranjan Das (20) of Baunsabadi village under Mangalpur police limits in Jajpur district and cleaner of the bus, Ajay Kumar Behera (30) of Gadapokhari village under Badamba police limits in Cuttack district.

Informing this to media persons, Sambalpur SP Sanjeev Arora said police were tipped off about transportation of huge quantity of codeine laced cough syrup in a bus. Subsequently, a police team intercepted the bus at Ainthapali Chhack in Sambalpur city.

During search, the cops recovered 18 packets containing 5040 bottles of cough syrup from the possession of Milan who was travelling in the bus as a passenger. Milan was transporting the contraband in connivance with Manoranjan and Ajay.

Arora also said an inter-State racket was involved in illegal trading of codeine laced cough syrup and investigation is on to arrest all the criminals involved in the racket. The accused persons had been transporting cough syrup bottles frequently and selling the drug at the higher price to addicts in Bhubaneswar.

A police team is camping at Bhubaneswar to find out the involvement of others in the racket.

The accused have been arrested under section 21 (C) and 29 NDPS Act.
