KAKINADA: The Telugu Desam Paty (TDP) comfortably took the Kakinada Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Friday, winning 32 of the 48 divisions while its ally the BJP chipped in with three. The opposition YSRC won 10 seats.

The election results will further boost the ruling TDP’s confidence as they follow up on the party’s victory in the Nandyal Assembly byelection earlier this week.

In the Kakinada local election, the TDP had contested only 39 of the 48 divisions, leaving the rest to the BJP.

The YSRC banked heavily on the Kapu and the anti-incumbency factors to lift its spirits.

TDP supporters in the city celebrated exuberantly as the results came in. Home minister Nimmakayala Chinna Rajappa, excise minister K S Jawahar burst crackers and beat drums to express their happiness.

The YSRC cadres were a disappointed lot and shied away from the media.
