Two dalit youth attempted suicide in front of the camp office of Manakondur legislator and State Cultural Council Chairman Rasamayi Balakishan on Sunday evening.

Sources said that Mahankali Srinivas (27) and Yalala Parushramulu (26) of Gudem village of Bejjanki mandal from Siddipet district visited the camp office of the legislator, doused themselves with kerosene, and attempted self-immolation.

They sustained more than 40% burn injuries. The local residents shifted them to the government headquarters hospital in the town.

It is alleged that the victims had been pleading with the legislator to allocate three acres of land to them as promised by the State Government during the elections. Alleging that the authorities had provided land to ineligible beneficiaries, they allegedly were pleading with the legislator to do justice to them by making frequent visits.

On failing to get land allocated, they reportedly resorted to this extreme act.

As soon as the the news spread, Minister for Finance and Civil Supplies Etala Rajender, Karimnagar Member of Parliament B. Vinod Kumar, legislator Gangula Kamalar, Mayor S. Ravinder Singh, Zilla Parishad Chairperson Tula Uma and others rushed to the hospital and consoled the victims.

The Minister assured them of looking into the issue and ordered an inquiry into the alleged allocation of land to ineligible persons. He also promised them of stern action against the accused persons if the allegation was proved right.

TPCC SC Cell president Arepalli Mohan also visited the hospital. Police Commissioner V.B. Kamalasan Reddy rushed to the spot and then to the hospital. Meanwhile, the two dalit youths were shifted to Hyderabad for better treatment.
