ARA: A group of cow vigilantes allegedly created ruckus demanding arrest of cattle smugglers after police seized a truck carrying cattle at Jagdishpur, about 25km from here, on Tuesday.
The cattle were allegedly being taken to Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh for illegal slaughter. SHO of Jagdishpur police station Baidyanath Choudhary said although police arrested the driver of the truck, Vishwanath, a resident of Fatehpur in UP, the cattle smugglers managed to escape.
He said the cattle were being actually carried to Kanpur on the pretext of sale at the cattle fair being held at Bihiya and Garahni. “The truck was carrying 14 cattle in the seized truck,” the SHO said, adding locals reached the spot and started protesting after the police intercepted the truck. He said the cattle were loaded at Khaptaha village under Jagdishpur police station.
On September 3, the police had arrested two persons under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, after thousands of people gheraoed a house at Sahar, about 35 km from here, as they found a calf carcass lying in a house. Piro SDPO and other senior officials had to rush to the spot to diffuse the tension. Earlier, on August 3, the cow vigilantes had beaten up alleged beef smugglers at Sahpur when they intercepted a truck carrying beef. The police had seized an illegal slaughter house at Ranisagar village.
