Journalist shot by 2 bike-borne assailants in Bihar’s Arwal, condition critical

Pankaj Mishra, a local journalist, working for Rashtriya Sahara newspaper was shot by 2 bike-borne assailants in Bihar's Arwal on Thursday. His condition is said to be serious at the moment.

PATNA: Two days after journalist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead in Bangalore, a part time journalist Pankaj Mishra (40) was shot at by two criminals near Palanwa Pul under Bansi police station in Arwal district on Thursday. Rs 1 lakh was also looted from the journalist by the criminals.
Arwal SP Dilip Kumar said that Mishra was shot at by two of his neighbours having criminal antecedents.

"One of the assailants who was involved in the incident was arrested by police after the incident while another was still evading arrest," the SP said adding he was retuning on a bike to his residence at Bansi village from Mali.
Arwal Sadar SDPO Shailendra Kumar said that Mishra, who was associated with a Hindi daily, was on his way home after withdrawing Rs 1 lakh from Mali branch of Punjab National Bank (PNB).
"While returning, two youths Kundan Kumar and Ambika Kushwaha, who were standing near the Palanwa Pul, waved Mishra to stop. Mishra stopped his bike as both were neighbours and the two asked for lift upto Bansi village on which Mishra allowed them to sit on bike as the duo were also his neighbours," the SDPO said.
"Kundan and Ambika fled from the spot with the money Mishra was carrying. Hearing Mishra's scream, villagers also reached at the spot and chased the two criminal," said the SDPO.

He also said that a woman caught Ambika but she was thrown away. Ambika then fled with pistol and money. He said police also reached the spot soon and followed the path taken for retreat by the criminals.
He said that Kundan was later arrested while raids were on to nab Ambika. The SDPO said that the area is at border of Arwal and Aurangabad district and was full of dense forest.
He said Kundan and Ambika were lodged in jail after a stolen bike was recovered from them. Kundan had come out of jail on July 28 this year while Ambika came out of jail on bail just ten days back.
In another incident, a journalist Manoj Kumar was allegedly thrashed by some liquor smugglers at Rasoolpur Salim under Ahiyapur police station in Muzaffarpur district on Thursday.
Ahiyapur police station SHO Vijay Kumar said that the victim had identified himself as bureau chief of a Hindi daily. "He was sent to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital for treatment," the SHO said adding FIR was in process of getting lodged.
