Six die in accident on Hubballi-Vijayapura NH

Six people died on the spot and two others were injured in a head-on collision involving a cruiser van and a KSRTC bus, on Hubballi-Vijayapura National Highway in Bilagi taluk in the district on Friday.

The deceased have been identified as Nagesh Mali (48), who was driving the van and a resident of Upalayi village, Anantha Shinde (65) of Darapal, Panduranga Balasaheb Salunke (24), Rajani Hanumantha Shinde (60) and Sugreev Karande (45). The identity of one more deceased is yet to be ascertained. Nagesh Mali was the vice president of Mali Samaj in Mahad. All the deceased were relatives and residents of Darapal and Upalayi villages in Mahad taluk of Solapur district in Maharashtra.

Police said the cruiser van was on its way to Solapur in Maharashtra from Shivamogga and the bus was bound for Hubballi from Vijayapura.

The injured have been shifted to Bagalkot hospital for treatment. The driver of the bus, Saifuddin, sustained minor injuries in the accident and was treated at Bilagi taluk hospital.

The deceased members had gone to Shivamogga to get one of their relatives, a cancer patient, treated with native medicine and had left for their native late on Thursday night. Police said the driver of the cruiser van hit the bus in an attempt to overtake a vehicle. The van has been badly damaged in the accident.

Bilagi police have registered a case.
