SASARAM: In yet another instance of honour killing, an extremely backward caste (EBC) couple were shot dead and their two daughters sustained gunshot injuries in an attack by members of an upper caste family at Mubarakpur under Mohania police station in Kaimur district on Friday night.
The couple – Kamal Chaudhary (50) and Moti Devi (45) – were killed as their son had eloped with a girl of the upper caste family and married her.

Police said the couple’s son, Dharmendra Chaudhary, had eloped with the daughter of one Arvind Singh of Mubarakpur village, about 12km from Mohania town, last month. "Instead of lodging an FIR with the police, the girl’s family members decided to teach a lesson to the Chaudhary family after they refused to disclose the whereabouts of the boy," said a police source, adding the girl’s family members became furious after her marriage photographs surfaced and they attacked the boy’s family on Friday night, killing Kamal and his wife on the spot.
Mohania DSP Manoj Ram said an FIR had been registered against the accused family members of the girl and efforts were on to arrest them.
"It was a pre-planned strategy as the accused family had abandoned their house some days ago. On Friday night, two brothers of the girl – Dimpal Singh and Niraj Singh – and one of their relatives – Pradeep Singh – stormed into the house of Chaudhury and opened indiscriminate fire. While Kamal and his wife, who were fast asleep, died on the spot, their daughters Kiran Devi and Sushmita Kumari sustained gunshot injuries. They were immediately rushed to the trauma centre of Banaras Hindu University where the condition of Sushmita is stated to be critical," the DSP added.
He said Dimpal has criminal antecedents and several cases are lodged against him in Uttar Pradesh.
