Hyderabad: 11-year-old girl made to stand outside boys’ toilet for not wearing uniform

The administrative office of a private school on the outskirts of Hyderabad was vandalised by parents and child rights activists on Monday, two days after a 11-year-old girl student was allegedly made to stand outside a boys’ washroom as punishment for not wearing the school uniform. The incident took place at Rao’s High School at Ramachandrapuram.

The girl’s father P Vijay said his daughter, a Class V student, returned from school traumatised on Saturday evening. “She broke down and said she was made to stand near the boys’ washroom as she turned up in casuals instead of the uniform. I had written a note in her school diary, stating that she could not wear her uniform as it was washed and didn’t dry completely. But the Physical Education teacher who pulled her up refused to listen, shouted at her and asked her to stand outside the washroom,” he said.

“My daughter felt very humiliated and has refused to go to school. She is asking me if she has to go to a school like this where students are humiliated. She said that students who came to the washroom laughed at her,’’ said Vijay.

The school’s in-charge Priyanka K said, “She was asked to stand outside her classroom which happens to be near the washroom. The girl did not show the note written by her father in the diary. She was sent back to the class after a few minutes. We have suspended the teacher who punished her.’’ Parents of the girl have shot a video of the girl narrating her experience and sent it to child rights outfit Balala Hakkula Sangam, which has demanded that a case be registered against the teacher.
