OKLAHOMA CITY – An Oklahoma City woman is demanding answers from her landlord after she claims her rented home has been infested with bed bugs.

Leigha McDonald moved into the home September 1 on Minnie Lane with her son. According to McDonald, she was only there for a week when she noticed bed bugs in her son’s room while they were moving in pieces of furniture.

“Immediately, I scream and freak out, but I had my boyfriend here, and I went and got him and we just pulled the mattress out and threw it out,” McDonald said.

Since then, she tells News 4 she’s noticed bites on her own body plus her son’s. McDonald said she also immediately purchased sprays for the home but is now in the process of moving out, as she claims her landlord will not pay to help disinfect her belongings.

“You can’t really move everything, because it’s infected, so what I’m trying to do is just heat treat my clothes or just little items that I can pull out. As far as the big stuff, if I bring it anywhere, it’s going to come with me,” McDonald said.

Janna Bernard lives behind McDonald and claims past tenants have had similar issues with bed bugs that also went untreated.

“It’s just not fair. It’s not fair they’re [landlord] doing this to people when they have the money to fix it,” Bernard said.

News 4 got in touch with a woman we were told was the landlord on Tuesday. Despite telling us she had offered McDonald a return on rent and deposit, she denied owning the property.

“I’m not the one you need to talk to,” she told us over the phone. “You need to call back.”

She also denied any claims of past problems. According to her, this is the first time they’ve ever had an issue with the property.

As for McDonald, she said her living arrangements remain unclear at this time.

“I’m flabbergasted,” she said. “I can’t believe that anybody would do this or continue to do this to innocent people.”

The woman on the phone also told News 4 the property will be inspected before being rented out to any future tenants.
