Jeremy Corbyn today teased Piers Morgan on Twitter about an encounter with Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin.

The Labour leader joked in Spanish - after broadcaster Mr Morgan complained that the other two had used the language to “shut me out of the conversation”.

“It was a pleasure to meet you,” Mr Corbyn tweeted to the player, adding: “It’s better not to tell him what we were talking about, he wouldn’t understand. Well played in the match on Sunday.”

Bellerin replied: “Thank you very much Mr Corbyn and of course, everything stays between us! It was a pleasure to meet you!”

The Twitter ribbing came after journalist and Good Morning Britain presenter Mr Morgan bumped into Bellerin, who was born in Barcelona, at the GQ Men of the Year awards last Tuesday.

In his diary column for the Daily Mail, Mr Morgan said he was talking to the player about Arsenal’s struggles when the Labour leader came over and joined the conversation.

Mr Morgan claimed: “When I tried to interrupt, the Labour leader – whose wife is Mexican – promptly switched to fluent Spanish to shut me out of the conversation.

“‘What did you tell him?’ I asked.

“Corbyn smirked. ‘I told him to please send Arsène Wenger my very best and assure him he continues to have my full support, even if he’s lost yours, Piers. In fact, particularly because he’s lost yours…’”

Reacting to the teasing today, Mr Morgan retweeted the pair’s Twitter exchange with his own attempt at the Spanish language.

The broadcaster wrote: “I think #WengerOut is the same in both languages.”
