Lingayat rally in Kalaburagi on Sept 24

A massive rally of Lingayats will be organised in Kalaburagi on Sunday to pressurise the Union government to declare Lingayat a separate religion, said Irrigation Minister M B Patil  on Wednesday.

KALABURAGI: A massive rally of Lingayats will be organised in Kalaburagi on Sunday to pressurise the Union government to declare Lingayat a separate religion, said Irrigation Minister M B Patil  on Wednesday.

Patil told reporters that the proposed rally is nothing to do with Congress party. Irrespective of their party affiliations, people who are proud of being Lingayats will participate in the rally.
It is expected that over 5 lakh people from Karnataka, Maharastra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu will participate in the proposed mega rally.

Patil said that the members of Lingayat community have already completed two rounds of spreading awareness among Lingayats on the proposed rally in Kalaburagi. The activists have visited house to house in Hyderabad-Karnataka region and have requested the people of Lingayat community to attend the rally in large numbers.

He said that previously a memorandum was submitted to the Union government to give separate religion status to Veerashaiva community. As the government has not accorded the status, they have proposed to appeal the Union government to give separate religion status to Lingayat community.
The minister said that when UPA government was in power in 1993, it gave separate religion status to Jainism. “We are demanding the same procedure in according separate religion tag to Lingayats,” he said.
