Some days it’s not you’re night.

Thursday, the Eagles of Thompson Valley couldn’t find their groove as they lost 49-2 to visiting Holy Family.

Thompson Valley’s defense was chasing receivers around all game with the Tigers’ ability to get the ball down the field with the passing game. Stone Samaras was spreading the ball around throughout the game, getting huge catches from Devin Doroff and Braedon Peters.

Samaras threw four touchdown passes in the game leading to a 28-2 lead, accounting for 178 passing yards on those four throws.

“They’re the No. 1 team in 3A, so we knew that they were going to put up some points. We had a few minor mistakes that costed us some points in the red zone,” TVHS coach Matt Smith said.

Running the ball between the tackles was also huge for Holy Family. The Tigers had multiple big runs, including a 69-yarder by Hayden Strange through the right side to begin the second half. The Eagles defense was gassed throughout the game and Holy Family knew it could grab some huge yards on the ground.

TVHS had the momentum for the first three minutes as they backed  Samaras deep into the end zone eventually forcing him outside the pocket where we stepped on the end line for a safety, but after that it was tough sledding.

Eagles’ senior 1uarterback Kanaan Turnbull couldn’t find any of his receivers in the first half. There were multiple times in the game that Turnbull dropped back and had a collection of Holy Family defenders in his face. Turnbull was only able to play the first half, as he got injured late in the second quarter.

It was more of the same for backup quarterback Ti Smack in the second half. The junior couldn’t get the pace going either while taking multiple sacks and hurries.

“We took a big loss tonight, but this was the most we’ve played as a family this year. Especially after losing our starting quarterback,” said Smack.

Berthoud comes to town next Friday to face Thompson Valley at 7 p.m.
