Emily Thornberry recreated her awkward election night high five with Jeremy Corbyn as party faithful chanted her name at the end of a barnstorming speech at Labour Party Conference.

The Shadow Foreign Secretary blasted Boris Johnson and Michael Gove and vowed Labour would clamp down on arms sales, to a rapturous reception from activists.

At the end of her speech, delegates sang her name to the tune of the White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army - an honour usually reserved for Jeremy Corbyn.

She made a cheeky reference to an awkward moment on election night, where the Labour leader went for a high five, but his hand missed and ended up connecting with Thornberry’s chest.

Corbyn took to the stage to re-create the moment at the end of her speech - and managed to hit her hand this time.

Of her Tory counterpart, she joked: “I know Boris doesn’t like paternity tests, but we might need one for Brexit . We need to get him in a studio with Jeremy Kyle.

“Yes, I’m sorry, Mr Johnson, we’ve got the results back. It looks like this one is yours.

“It must have been that wild night out you had with Michael Gove.

“I’ve calculated your maintenance payments.

“That’ll be £350 million a week.”

She went on to promise a “wholesale review” of how decisions are made on sales of arms to foreign countries, including Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

She accused the Tories of exploited the current, outdated system, which allows ministers to make decisions without scrutiny from Parliament, and is open to lobbying from the arms industry.

Ms Thornberry pointedly condemned Venezuela after the Labour leadership was accused of repeatedly failing to do so.

"From Venezuela to The Philippines we see the rule of law ignored and originally democratic governments turning into increasingly autocratic regimes," she said.

She also called on "supine, sycophantic and spineless" Theresa May to quit Downing Street, saying: "Step aside! Step aside!

"End the shambles of your government and let the grown-ups take charge!"
