Emily Thornberry has called on Boris Johnson to prove he is the father of Brexit by taking a paternity test, in a thinly veiled attack on the Foreign Secretary's personal life.

Speaking to delegates at the Labour Party conference in Brighton, the shadow foreign secretary said he should appear on The Jeremy Kyle Show and provide evidence that Brexit was "one of yours," in an apparent reference to Mr Johnson's love child.

She also urged members to take a moment to "sympathise with poor old Boris" who she said had "not been happy lately".

She said: "Apparently he's sick of being blamed for the way that Brexit is going and all the broken promises of the Leave campaign.

"I'm sorry - what? Who does he think made all those promises? Who does he think was in charge of the Leave campaign?

"I know that Boris doesn't like paternity tests but maybe we need one for Brexit."

She continued: "Maybe we should take him into a studio with Jeremy Kyle: 'Sorry, Mr Johnson, we got the results back and it looks like this one is one of yours'.

"'It must have been that wild night out you had with Michael Gove... I've calculated your maintenance payments and that'll be £350 million a week'."

In 2013, the Appeal Court ruled that the public had a right to know that Mr Johnson had fathered a daughter during an extramarital affair.

It came as David Lammy accused Mr Johnson of practicing the politics of fascist regimes of the 1920s and 1930s.

At an anti-racism fringe event he said: "He is playing a game and the game he is playing is the worst game in politics it is entirely self serving how much does he care about that white working class really?

"If he gains he's fine and we must stand up to it because it's the same nasty politics that we saw in the 1920s and 30s and we see where it leads you."

Mr Lammy also warned he will not allow the Government to recreate "the Empire" by "dumping the EU" and vowed to chain himself to the front door of Downing Street to prevent a visit from Donald Trump.

The Tottenham MP, who has been vocal in the wake of the Grenfell fire disaster about the need for better living conditions and the impact of race and class, said he was "disappointed" that Labour was not holding more events to discuss racism.

He also claimed he had been told by some Labour members on Twitter not to attend the Stand up to Racism event.
