ASCSN threaten to shut down NEMA operations

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has said it would embark on a three-day warning strike to shut down operations in all offices of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The threat by the union is coming two weeks after it threatened to go on a nationwide strike over unpaid promotion allowances, which prompted the Federal Government to negotiate, with a promise to pay the allowances.

Reason:

  • The agency’s refusal to implement hazard allowance, life insurance and the non-payment of overtime and travel allowances.

Highlights:

  • Announcing the planned strike at a press briefing on Monday in Abuja, the ASCSN Secretary-General, Bashir Lawan stated that a 21-day ultimatum issued to NEMA had expired and another seven-day notice would lapse on Tuesday without any invitation by NEMA management for talks.
  • During the warning strike, activities and operations at all NEMA offices nationwide will be paralysed.
  • Notices of the strike had been sent to President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly, the Head of Service of the Federation, and the Minister of Labour and Employment.
  • Also speaking, the ASCSN chairman, NEMA branch, Saad Bello alleged nepotism and improper placement of staff employed since 2009.
