SIVAGANGAI: AT the 12th General Body Council and Executive Committee meeting of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), held at Karaikudi, on Saturday, DMDK founder Vijayakanth was selected as the permanent General Secretary of the party.

The meeting was convened at a private marriage hall in Karaikudi, Sivagangai district, and chaired by the founder Vijayakanth, who was accompanied by his wife Premalatha. Sixteen resolutions including appointing the party’s Youth wing Secretary Sudeesh and three others as Deputy General Secretary were passed. A resolution stating Vijayakanth has been selected the permanent General Secretary of the party was also passed.

Resolutions condemning the State government for bringing National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) exams, demanding that the State government should establishe the Cauvery Management Board, and one asking for the conduct of local body elections were also passed. More than 2,000 general body council members, including  formerMLAs, participated in the meeting on Saturday.

‘Rural students let down’

After the 12th General Body Council Vijayakanth said that people should restrain themselves from voting for the national parties the Congress and the BJP, and the DMK and the AIADMK in the State, for their own good.

Vijayakanth said that Tamil Nadu was facing a lot of problems and that the present government headed by Edappadi Palaniswami, which is not stable, would be dissolved. Vijayakanth also charged that the State machinery had failed to protect the people and that the government had let down the rural students in Tamil Nadu by allowing National Eligibility and Entrance Test for admissions to medical colleges in the State.

The former actor extended his support to an agitation being planned by a student organisation ‘Enn Desam Enn Katchi’ against the hike in fuel prices, which is to be conducted on October 2. He said that his party cadre would participate in the agitation by not purchasing petrol, as a mark of protest.

Commenting on the remarks made by the Minister for Environment, K C Karuppannan, who stated that the Noyyal River was polluted only because of the foam caused by the use of soap and not due to industrial waste, Vijayakanth said that the foam may have been formed by the family members of the minister.
