KOLKATA: A post office peon in Malda is under the CBI radar for owning properties worth Rs 1.39 crore.
The CBI has registered a case of disproportionate assets against Biswajit Biswas, who works as a peon at a post office in West Bengal's Malda district. He'd been unable to satisfactorily answer how he amassed so much wealth in the last nine years while under questioning by the investigative agency.
In 2008, Biswas’s total property was of Rs 8 lakh, sources said.
CBI got to know that in between 2008 and 2017, Biswas’s income increased to Rs 12 lakh on paper. But at the same time, he has saved almost Rs 7 lakh, meaning the peon has spent only Rs 5 lakh from 2008 to 2017.
When the CBI started enquiry against Biswas, they were shell-shocked. The investigating agency uncovered that the peon had built a palatial house worth Rs 1.62 crore in Malda’s Bulbulchandi village in 2012. A deed was also found, worth of Rs 3.03 lakh. Another deed of Rs 1.49 lakh was also found the same year.
During the last nine years, Biswas bought a spa center and a beauty parlor worth Rs 4.3 lakh. He and his wife have several bank accounts and safety deposits.
CBI officials believe that these property are probably bought with undeclared income or black money. So an enquiry has been initiated against Biswas and he will soon be questioned again by the CBI.
