Police chief meets family of four murdered women in Shahdara

The family is among the oldest in east Delhi.

The deaths of four women and a security guard at a sprawling mansion in Shahdara’s Mansarovar Park area prompted a visit by Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to the family — he spent around 15 minutes at the crime scene on Monday evening and met the family.

A source said such visits by the police chief himself are “quite rare”. In June, 2011, the then police commissioner B K Gupta had participated in an eviction operation at Ramlila Maidan. Since then, the police commissioner has not personally visited a crime scene or incident spot, sources said.

The visit, sources said, will “prompt police teams to solve the case as soon as possible”. About 25 police teams have been tasked with questioning the family and relatives. Sources said Patnaik also asked the district DCP to provide regular updates. Apart from the DCP, Patnaik was accompanied by the Special Commissioner and Joint Commissioner of the eastern range.

A family member, Shakun Jindal, said the police chief arrived around 6 pm. “He didn’t talk much but assured us that the accused will be arrested soon,” he said.

The family is among the oldest in east Delhi. Urmila Jindal (78), and her three daughters, Sangeeta Gupta (52), Nupur Jindal (48) and Anjali Jindal (45), owned property worth Rs 24 crore and would get Rs 1.5 lakh monthly rent, police sources said.

During investigation, police found that the security guard, Rakesh, was seen alive by a family member around 1 am.
