Ganta orders inquiry into Nuzvid student suicide

VIJAYAWADA: A day after a student committed suicide at IIIT- Nuzvid in Krishna District, Human Resource and Development Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao on Thursday called for an inquiry. 
The HRD Minister, who was in New Delhi, spoke to  IIIT Nuzvid Director Veeranki Venkata Dasu over phone and asked him to conduct an inquiry to find the reasons behind the student’s suicide. 

Ganta also asked the IIIT Director to participate in the ‘Suicide Prevention’ meet to be organised for the private educational institutions in Vijayawada on October 16. The meeting will discuss the future course of action in preventing students’ suicide, which is on rise in the State for the last few months.

When contacted, DSP Nuzvid division V Srinivasa Rao said that causes of the student’s suicide are yet to be ascertained. 

As part of the investigation, officials interacted with the roommates of the deceased, Lakshmi Narasimha Murthy, and inquired whether ragging was the cause behind the victim taking the extreme step. However, it was not established, he added. Krishna District Collector B Lakshmikantham on Thursday called for a magisterial inquiry into the suicide of the student.There has been a startling rise in the number of student suicides in AP. In little over a month, six intermediate students killed themselves.
