With 30 reservoirs ready, GHMC to end water woes of 3 lakh people

HYDERABAD: Drinking water woes of over three lakh people in the peripheral areas of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will soon come to an end as about 30 service reservoirs taken up with HUDCO aid are ready for inauguration.
Officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Saturday reviewed the progress of the construction of reservoirs.Construction work on 30 reservoirs is completed.
They are ready for inauguration.Officials are planning to commission the 30 reservoirs by October-end.
A total of 56 reservoirs including ground-level service reservoirs (GLSRs) with a capacity of 279 million litres (ML) per day have been taken up at Uppal, Kapra, Alwal, Ramachandrapuram, Qutubullapur, LB Nagar, Rajendranagar, Serilingampally , Kukatpally and Patancheru.
Thirteen reservoirs were commissioned earlier. By this month-end 30 will be brought into use. The remaining are in various stages of construction. Work on two reservoirs at Kowkur and Jonnabanda could not be taken up due to land issues. The land be longing to the Rangareddy district is yet to be handed over to the water board. The board hopes to complete the under-construction reservoirs by the end of February next year.
The board is now busy laying pipelines connecting the reservoirs. The total length of the pipeline proposed is 1800km. Of this, work on 1600km has been completed.
The water board has alre ady started work on providing `house service' connections from the newly laid pipelines. It is taking the help of self-help groups (SHGs) manned by women. A senior official told TOI that instructions were issued to replace old pipelines.

In Qutubullapur, LB Nagar and Rajendranagar areas work on the pipelines is going on at a brisk pace. Already 65kms of pipeline network has been laid. The total pipeline proposed in these areas is 185kms. About 100km of old pipeline network was replaced in Alwal, Kapra, Uppal, Ramchandrapuram, Kukatpally , Serilingampally and Patancheru.
Once the new pipelines are laid the service reservoirs commissioned, people living in peripheral areas of the city will get augmented water supply through taps.Tap pressure will also go up.
