BENGALURU: A 36-year-old man was washed away when he was taking a selfie near a sand mining pit in Ramanagara on Sunday. The deceased is Nandish, a resident of Ramanagara and a small-time businessman.

A senior police officer said the incident occurred around 8.30am. Nandish and three of his friends went to Jogidoddi village near Ramanagara to witness the flood in the area. Nandish was taking a selfie of the flooded sand mining pit when the earth where he and his friends were standing gave way. All four fell but Nandish was buried under the debris. Just as his friends were looking for Nandish, the flood water washed him away.

Nandish’s friends alerted other people nearby. They then informed Ramanagara Rural police and the Fire and Emergency services. A search operation was carried out but Nandish was not found till the evening.
A police officer said, “There are several pits in the area and due to the force of the water Nandish was washed away. Efforts are on to find him.”

Nandish’s friend Lingaraju told Express that he was into social work and he aspired to join politics.
Lingaraju added that illegal sand mining is prevalent in the area and many residents had complained about it to the police and the officials concerned, but in vain. Nandish is survived by his wife and two children.
