Kairana BJP MP Hukum Singh on Monday joined the Gurjar community in demanding a CBI investigation into the killing of a man earlier this month in Gautam Budh Nagar in an alleged fake police encounter. Police had claimed that Sumit Gurjar, 25, had been wanted in a murder case and had been absconding before he was killed in the “encounter” on October 3.

However, Sumit’s family claimed he was picked up by police on September 30. They also claimed he had no criminal record and that the police put a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head after framing him. The MP had spoken at a mahapanchayat organised by the community at Sumit’s native Chirchita village of Bagpat district to protest the killing. “There is anger among the public over Sumit’s killing. They claim that it was a fake encounter. I have assured them of taking up the matter with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and seeking fair investigation into the encounter by CBI,” he told The Indian Express.

At the mahapanchayat, several speakers threatened to intensify their protest if action was not taken against the “erring” police personnel within 10 days. Samajwadi Party leader Atul Pradhan, who too was at the gathering, said, “We have given 10 days to the state government to fullfil our demand of recommending CBI investigation into the encounter and lodging an FIR against the policemen involved in it. If government fails, we would hold a statewide protest.”

When contacted, Sumit’s cousin Sachin Gurjar said, “We have already sent letter to the Prime Minister and Chief Minister requesting for CBI investigation into the encounter.” He added that a prayer service was held for his cousin at the mahapanchayat.

Festive offer

According to Gautam Budh Nagar police, on October 2, police had arrested three persons who had confessed to the murder of two guards of a private firm and robbery last month. Police claimed that the trio had also revealed that Sumit too was also involved in the crime and a reward of of Rs 50,000 was declared on Sumit’s head the next day.

On October 3, police claimed, there was a shootout between police and a few persons in a car in Kasna area. One police officer and a person in the car were injured in the incident. While his “associates” escaped, the injured occupant in the car was taken to a hospital where doctors said declared him dead on arrival. He was later identified as Sumit Gurjar, police records say.
