Lake County offers mental health first aid training

The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center is offering several Youth Mental Health First Aid trainings to the public in November 2017 and January 2018.

The full-day workshops will provide adults with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and support adolescents who are at risk or displaying warning signs of mental health/substance use problems or experiencing a mental health crisis.

"Young people (ages 15-24) represent 30 percent of mental health emergency room visits and 42 percent of hospital admissions related to suicide and self injury in Lake County," health department Executive Director Mark Pfister said. "This Youth Mental Health First Aid training is a wonderful learning experience that helps those on the front lines - parents, teachers, coaches, medical personnel, and youth group leaders - learn how to better support our youth."

Sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 7, Nov. 16, Jan. 9 and Jan. 23, at the Lake County Health Department, 3010 Grand Ave., Waukegan. The cost is $20 per participant. To register or for more information, visit www.lakecountyil.gov/3980/Training-Opportunities or call Angela Stefani at (847) 377-8961.
