Christian Bale and Amy Adams are completely unrecognizable as aged Dick and Lynne Cheney on the set of Backseat

He is renowned for undergoing drastic physical transformations for roles.

And Christian Bale was barely recognizable when he was spotted on the set of his forthcoming Dick Cheney biopic Backseat alongside co-star Amy Adams in Los Angeles on Monday.

The actor, 43, is playing the former Vice President in the upcoming film, which is written and directed by Adam McKay.

The pair had previous been spotted in character as the couple's younger selves; but on Monday they both underwent a jaw-dropping make-over to play the power couple in their sixties, when Cheney served under George W Bush.

Bale had the look down from his expensive suit and tie to his wire-rimmed glasses; from his much fuller frame to his receding white hair.

The dedicated actor has piled on the pounds and undergone an image transformation to take on the role.

Amy wore a wine-colored skirt suit, her pale make-up and thinned lips making her an almost perfect match for the now 76-year-old.

While she is best known for being the spouse of the former Vice President, Lynne  -nee Vincent - is herself an accomplished author, academic and executive.

The film will chronicle Dick's rise to becoming arguably the most powerful Vice President in history, and will examine the effect his policies had on the world.

In later years, the politician became the CEO of Halliburton but was most notably known for being in the center of foreign policy which pursued both Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

It seems unlikely he shall be cast in a favorable light, as the film is written and directed by Democrat and Bernie Sanders supporter Adam McKay.

Notable stars already signed on to the film include Steve Carrell as former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsefeld and Bill Pullman as Gerald Ford's second in command, Nelson Rockefeller.

Sam Rockwell is set to portray the 43rd President, George W. Bush, and Lisa Gay Hamilton will play former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.

Tyler Perry meanwhile has been cast as her predecessor, Colin Powell.

No stranger to undergoing an image overhaul, Bale previously demonstrated his commitment to transforming for roles when he tanned and beefed up for American Psycho in 2000 and shed 70lbs for The Machinist in 2004.

In 2013, Bale told People that gaining weight for American Hustle was not difficult: 'It's easy to start with ... you're just sitting on your butt and you're eating lots of doughnuts and eating bread and everything like that.

'But you do it for two months and your body starts to rebel against you, it's just saying, "No, please," and your back is aching and there's also some problems with that.

'And then you've got to lose the weight at the end of it, you know? I wish it was simple.'

Amy and Christian last graced the silver screen together in the 2013 crime drama American Hustle alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner.
