Kirkgunzeon curler Grant Hardie led Scotland to victory at the World Mixed Curling Championships in Switzerland.

He was the team skip as they beat Canada 8-5 in an extra end in Champery on Saturday.

And the civil engineering student stayed cool under pressure to hit the winning shot.

Grant said: “It’s brilliant. I don’t know where to start.

“The whole team played brilliantly all week and especially during the play-offs they came to the fore. I’m absolutely delighted. They came at us really hard at the end.

“They’re obviously a great team to get to the final and we just managed to hold on."

He added: “I’d thrown that line, four or five times in the game, so I was pretty confident but obviously with it being for the win you’re always a little on edge.

“I had the line and the guys swept it through to make it. It is absolutely brilliant.”

Canada opened the scoring in the first end before the Scots levelled things up.

By the end of the fourth end it was 4-1 to Scotland before the Canadians hit back for a point after the break but Team Hardie responded immediately in the sixth.

Canada reduced the deficit in the seventh end by scoring two points to trail by a point going into the eighth end.

They then levelled the scores at 5-5 after Scotland’s draw with their final stone was a touch wide.

In the extra-end Canada applied all the pressure in an attempt to force another steal.

Grant faced two Canadian shot stones and threw a double take-out with his final stone to remove the opposition counters and score three points to make Scotland the champions.
