Anger over an alleged custody death sparked violent clashes in Gujarat's Dahod's Chilakota area that has so far left one dead and several injured.

The trigger behind the violence was the death of man involved in a dacoity case. Locals allege the man died due to police assault during interrogation. A mob of around 500 men surrounded the Jesawada police station in Garbada taluka after a tribal man, Kanesh Gamara, allegedly died in police custody the previous morning. A police vehicle was also torched in the melee that saw the cops lobbing tear gas shells and resorting to firing to control the crowd.

The deceased has been identified as Ramsu Mohaniya, a resident of Usarva village. However, it is not clear whether he died in police firing or firings by some locals. The injured have been admitted to hospitals.

"The situation is under control now," said a police official.
