The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed it will support a police investigation into the death of a man in Woking on Thursday (October 27).

The man was fatally injured while working at a premises in Commercial Way. It is understood the unit was undergoing a refit when the incident happened.

Surrey Police confirmed the man was pronounced dead at the scene after he sustained fatal head injures and that the HSE had been advised.

On Friday, a spokesman for the HSE told Get Surrey : "HSE attended the scene and advised on a safe method of removing the shutter. HSE are supporting the police who retain primacy."

Images and footage from the scene showed a shutter in the entrance to the premises, with one end seemingly fixed to the ceiling and the other on the floor.

Said Surrey Police in a statement: "Commercial Way between Chertsey Road and Church Street East is currently closed and is likely to be so for a few hours, so please avoid the area."

An investigation into the incident is under way

The statement continued: "We attended with other emergency services this morning following a report of a man sustaining head injuries in a place of work.

"The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Health and Safety Executive has been advised and enquiries are ongoing."

The force later added officers expected the road to be closed overnight while initial investigations continued.

Oaktree, the firm understood to have been carrying out the refit, said in a statement "the incident is being addressed by the appropriate authorities" and that it had "no comment at this time".
