Police fired at a mob of about 500 tribals, which attacked a police station in Jesawada town following the alleged death of a man in custody, killing one person, police said on Friday.

Two persons were injured in the incident last night.

Eight policemen were also injured when the mob allegedly pelted stones and torched a police van, a police official said.

The deceased was identified as Ramasu Mohaniya, a resident of Jesawada.

A mob of around 500 men surrounded the Jesawada police station in Garbada taluka after a tribal man, Kanesh Gamara, allegedly died in police custody the previous morning.

"The mob pelted stones at policemen, which left eight of them injured. They then torched one police van. To control the mob, around 10 teargas shells were lobbed," an official said.

When the situation did not improve, police opened fire, killing one person and injuring two.

"The situation is under control now," the official added.
