A kidnap gang who stripped their victim naked and locked him in a car boot were given lengthy jail sentences yesterday.

The four men’s captive, mechanic Emmanuel Chidubem, managed to halt the BMW by pulling out fuses in the boot of the car.

And when the kidnappers opened the boot, he tried to fight his way to freedom.

The four men then fled as shocked passers-by raised the alarm.

The gang were sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh yesterday after a jury found them guilty of assault and abduction last month.

Sanchez Facey, 23, Glen Elamo, 20, and Arnold Mukueto, 22, were each jailed for seven years. Hooman Sojoodi, 22, was given a sentence of seven-and-a-half years.

Elamo is serving a 42-month jail term in England for drug offences and his new sentence will be added on to that.

Judge Lady Carmichael said Emmanuel, 27, was badly injured during his ordeal. The gang beat him, kicked him and struck him with a blunt weapon after seizing him from an address in Edinburgh on February 10.

The judge said: “It is utterly appalling and unacceptable that you should resort to the violent and lawless conduct of which you have been convicted.”

She added that the motive for their crime did not emerge during the trial but it was clear they wanted to “extract money for some reason”.

Lady Carmichael said it was plain that Emmanuel was afraid, having been beaten, bound, stripped and driven round the streets of the city.

Social worker Julie Arbuckle, 47, who was among the witnesses when Emmanuel got out of the boot, told the trial: “They were all kicking and punching him and trying to get him into the car.

“At one point, the naked guy, they had got him in the car, but he got out the other door.”

She said the incident was “frantic and shocking”.

Julie added: “He looked quite injured. His whole face was swollen.”

The court heard she shouted at the attackers that the police were coming and they fled.

She then told Emmanuel the police were on their way and he replied: “They can’t help me. They can’t do anything for me”.

Nigerian-born Emmanuel, from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, told the trial he was visiting Edinburgh on the latest of a number of trips when the gang struck. He said: “They wanted a transfer of funds.”

He said he had an iPad with him and bank cards and about £1200 was taken from a business account. He denied owing the men any money.

The court heard yesterday that Sojoodi, formerly of north London, has a business degree and previously worked at Tesco. He had a previous conviction for knife possession.

Facey, of north London, had a “minimal record”, the judge was told, while dad-of-one Elamo had a “fairly significant history of offending”.

Mukueto, originally from London, had been a semi-professional footballer and had lived in Aberdeen.
