NEW DELHI: Four persons died and six others are in critical condition after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Bihar's Rohtas district on Friday.
The deaths were reported at Kachhwa police station in Danwar village in Rohtas.
Confirming the deaths, Rohtas SP Manavjit Singh Dhillon said the Station House Officer (SHO) has been suspended in light of the incident. The matter is under investigation, he said.
"The matter is being investigated.
Only after the post-mortem reports are out, can we say with certainty that the deaths have been caused by consumption of illicit liquor," he added.
Six others who were taken are undergoing treatment at various private hospitals.
Angry villagers staged a demonstration at Danwar demanding action against those responsible for facilitating hooch trade in the area. They said all ten victims had consumed countrymade liquor on Friday and complained of nausea, headaches and vomiting later in the day.
In April 2016, the Nitish Kumar-led government had banned the sale and consumption of alcohol in the state. Following prohibition, reports of mishaps and deaths caused by imbibing spurious spirits have been rampant. More than 43,000 men have been put behind bars in Bihar for consuming booze.
