Doha: Hundreds of people flocked to Aspire Park to participate in ‘Pink Walk’ to create breast cancer awareness organised by Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) marking this year’s breast cancer awareness month.

The participants attended the lecture delivered by Heba Nassar, Health Educator at Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) Education Centre. A number of the participants gathered to create first time ever in Aspire ‘Human Ribbon’ which was followed by 1km walk around the park.

Talking to The Peninsula, Heba Nassar, Health Educator at Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) Education Centre, said: “Every year QCS collaborates with AZF in their breast cancer awareness campaign. We choose AZF as a sports organisation because it plays a big role in maintaining healthy lifestyle which helps prevent breast cancer. Such events always increase awareness about seriousness of breast cancer and the importance of disease and how to prevent it by following healthy lifestyles and exercise.”

“QCS also works on increasing public awareness about cancer by launching awareness campaigns throughout the year about various cancers in schools, universities and different institutions,” she added.

Sufyan Al Qudah, an official from Embassy of Jordan, said: “Today we are pleased to be a part of this great initiative from Aspire Zone Foundation. On behalf of all Jordanian community members, we are proud to be a part of an international initiative which is ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’. This event sets an example to host events which support the community and create awareness among people. Such events make us all adopt a healthy lifestyle.”

The event is part of AZF’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, and is organised in collaboration with the Qatar Cancer Society (QCS). The event attracted participants and volunteers from government organisations including the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Qatar Women’s Sport Committee (QWSC), Qatar Volunteer Center, in addition to Education institutions including Qatar University, Northwestern University in Qatar, Stenden Qatar – University of Applied Sciences, Yemenia University (Qatar Branch) and the Community College of Qatar.

In addition, volunteers from hospitality companies also signed up to take part including the Torch Doha, Mövenpick Hotel Al Aziziyah Doha, Doha Marriott Hotel, Rotana City Centre, Marsa Malaz Kempinski (The Pearl), City Centre Rotana Doha, Shangri-La Hotel Doha, and Crowne Plaza Doha – The Business Park. A number of private companies also took part in the campaign including Ooredoo Qatar, Ali Bin Ali Group, BPO+, Qatar Computer Services, and UniPost.

The event is designed to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), an annual international health campaign organised by major breast cancer charities every October. Organisations worldwide hold activities to increase awareness of the disease among community members, particularly women.

As a sports organisation focused on promoting an active and healthy lifestyle among all community members, AZF has deliberately selected walking for this event as an easy sports activity that enables people of all ages to get involved.
