Whether you love it or hate it, there's no denying Christmas is fast-approaching.

Toy experts have already predicted what they think will be on kids' Santa letters this year.

As long ago as it might seem, we were eager children too, with that one special toy we absolutely needed.

That one thing you'd tell your family about - and then announce to the entire school that you were definitely getting it.

Let's take a look at some of the bestselling Christmas toys from years goneby...

1987 - Sylvanian Families

These cute little animal families were massively sought after.

They came with hundreds of accessories – everything from houses to clothes and even table ornaments.

1988 - Ghostbusters Proton Pack

Kids everywhere wanted a "proton pack" - just like they had in the films, which you can still pick up on Amazon for £54.95.

1989 - Batman Batmobile

Drive on: Unlike the film version, The Batmobile toy wasn't a supercar

Carrying on the movie-inspired theme, 1989's most wanted toy was an exact replica of Batman's primary mode of transportation.

1990 - Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles

Still taking inspiration from the screen, but television this time.

The ‘heroes in a half-shell’ (Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo and Raphael) came kung fu kicking their way out of the sewers of New York and into the hearts of UK youngsters - before we were allowed to call them ninjas.

1991 - Gameboy

Nintendo launched this iconic pocket-sized computer game in the UK - and it went down a storm.

1992 - Tracy Island Electronic Playset

Thunderbirds was reborn - causing many parents to have to queue for this toy at Christmas .

1993 - Barbie

Mattel's fashion doll was a huge favourite for children this year.

1994 - Power Rangers action figures

The launch of Power Rangers caused worldwide demand with their ‘GO GO Power Rangers' theme tune.

1995 - Pogs

This craze swept playgrounds in the 90s. These 'milk caps' were to be collected and flipped like tiddlywinks- which you can still pick up online.

1996 - Toy Story Buzz Lightyear

"To infinity - and beyond."

The Pixar movie opened in the UK setting a new standard for animation and making overnight sensation of Buzz Lightyear.

1997 - Teletubbies - and Tamagotchis

1997 saw Teletubbies take kids' TV by storm, while Tamagotchi became a classroom craze as virtual pets came over from Japan.

Both toys created massive queues at stores as Toys R Us made overnight deliveries to cope with demand.

1998 - Furby

Bandai's interactive pet, Furby, launched in October 1998 and demand was huge.

Most people of a certain age will remember having or playing with a Furby. The toy was so popular, it was re-released in 2013 (see below) and then again last year

1999 - Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

Chris Tarrant’s popular TV quiz got the nation guessing and a new board game and interactive game flew off the shelves.

2000 - Teksta the robo-dog

Robot dogs were this festive season's best-sellers.

2001 - Bob The Builder

The much-loved handyman was on ALL pre-schoolers' wishlists.

2002 - Bratz dolls

Once upon a time, Bratz, the dolls with a ‘passion for fashion', sold like hot-cakes.

Bratz relaunched in 2015. Unfortunately, it was quite underwhelming.

2003 - Beyblades

Another Japanese phenomenon - Beyblades, the battling spinning tops took UK playgrounds by storm and became a hit for Christmas.

2004 - Robosapien

The radio control robot with NASA technology was in big demand with last minute deliveries being made to Toys R Us stores.

2005 - Tamagotchi (again)

Tamagotchi was relaunched as the new playground craze.

2006 - Doctor Who

‘Cyberman’ Mask stormed into the UK market with a huge range of toys from the new series, the new generation Doctor Who fans were born.

2007 - In the Night Garden Iggle Piggle

Newcomer Iggle Piggle from In the Night Garden was loved by little ones.

2008 - High School Musical Dance Mat

High School Musical became a musical phenomenon and reached popularity stakes in the toy sections.

2009 - Go Go Pet Hamsters

These interactive toy pets came with their own set of more than 40 different squeaks and chirps.

2010 - Jet Pack Buzz Lightyear

Buzz was catapulted back into the limelight with the release of Toy Story 3.

2011 - Leapfrogs LeapPad Explorer Tablet

The personalised learning tablet - just for kids.

Christmas 2011 was a technology-leg season for knowledgeable youngsters.

2012 - Skylanders Giants

Skylanders Giants cards

Skylanders took the UK by storm and continued to grow in popularity with games players and its combination of toy with technology onscreen.

2013 - Furby Boom

This one performed on the cute stakes, as its advanced features won the hearts of the family and once again identified toy and technology combination as winners.

2014 - Frozen Snow Glow Elsa

2014 was, of course, the year Frozen swept the globe. You have "Let It Go" stuck in your head now, don't you?

2015 - Barbie Saddle 'N' Ride

Barbie as we'd never seen her before - riding a horse on her own.

2016 - Hatchimals

Hatchimals flew off the shelves last year, with many frustrated parents struggling to get their hands on one.

Spin Master UK, the toy company behind the must-have gift, said the response to the toys was "extraordinary, exceeding all expectations".

2017 - What will it be this year?

The ultimate Christmas 2017 toy wish list has been published by Toys R Us, and includes everything from a £15 unicorn to a £135 tiger.

Amazon has also revealed its must-have toy predictions for this Christmas.
