Inside the mind of brutal child killer who previously 'tied up cats' and 'stabbed mum in the face'

A brutal child killer described stabbing his mum in the face and ‘tying up cats’ years before he murdered a toddler, the Echo can reveal.

Craig Smith, 28, had no previous convictions, but ominous flashes of his lethal temper emerged even a week before he beat his ‘step-son,’ two-year-old Teddy Tilston, to death on March 1.

The unemployed former bar manager head-butted a fridge during a row with Teddy’s mum, Ashleigh Willett, around eight days before the toddler died at the family home in Woodville Road, Birkenhead.

While projecting the image of a loving parent, Smith had “struggles with anger” which 25-year-old Willett, his partner of around a year, claimed to have no idea about.

Smith now faces life in prison after being convicted of murder and child cruelty following a four week trial at Liverpool Crown Court.

Sam Cook murder probe: Homes in Anfield raided

Two homes in Anfield have been raided by police investigating the murder of Sam Cook.

Has Sam Cook's murder left people scared to socialise in Liverpool?

Mr Cook, from Crosby, was stabbed to death in Empire bar on Seel Street on Saturday, October 21 while celebrating his 21st birthday.

It is thought the much-loved Liverpool FC fan was attacked after stepping in to defend a woman in the club.

His death sparked an outpouring of grief and calls for greater security at clubs and bars in Liverpool.

The Seel Street club had its premises licence temporarily suspended last week amid allegations of links to serious crime and disorder.

Today police confirmed have carried out warrants in the Anfield area as part of their ongoing enquiries.

At around 6am, detectives carried out raids at addresses in The Coppice, Anfield.

Officers are still asking for people who were in the basement of the Empire club, on Seel Street, who may have witnessed the 21-year-old’s murder in the early hours of Sunday, October 22 to come forward with any information they may have.

Detectives are also reminding people with any images or video from the night of Saturday, October 21 which could be relevant to send them to samcookmurder@merseyside.police.uk.

Anyone with photos or video can be assured that anything sent will be treated in confidence.

People with further information which could assist the investigation are asked to contact detectives on the hotline number 0800 230 600, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Five men arrested in connection with the murder of Sam Cook have been released by police.

A 21-year-old man from Walton has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Four other men have all been released on conditional bail to a date later this month.

VERDICTS IN THE TRIAL OF SMITH AND WILLETT

Craig Smith, 28, was arrested after two-year-old Teddy Tilston was found lifeless in the family home in Woodville Road, Birkenhead, on March 1 this year.

While two-year-old Teddy was dying, his twin sister Cassidy was being treated in hospital for a head injury, which prosecutors claim was also the result of an assault by Smith.

In a 999 call made at 2.25pm, Smith claimed Teddy had slipped underwater in the bath and was not breathing - but paramedics noted he was completely dry and both twins were found to have a ‘catalogue of injuries’.

The children’s mum, 25-year-old Ashleigh Willett, is also on trial jointly charged alongside Smith with two counts of child cruelty towards Teddy and Cassidy.

Smith also faces an additional charge of assaulting Cassidy causing her actual bodily harm, in relation to the head injury.
