Demanding land for the new District Court premises, hundreds of members of the Yadgir Advocates Association boycotted court proceedings and launched an indefinite dharna outside the Tahsildar’s office here on Thursday.

This is the second time that the advocates have launched an indefinite dharna on the same issue, after they withdrew it the first time in January this year following an assurance from district in-charge Minister Priyank Kharge.

B.B. Killanakeri, president of the association, lashed out at Mr. Kharge for failing to keep his promise. He accused the Minister of avoiding them whenever they visited him in Bengaluru.

“We had no option but to launch the indefinite dharna as the Minister is responsible for the delay in allotting land for the proposed construction of the court premises,” he said.

They also shouted slogans against all legislators for not taking the issue seriously and bringing pressure on the government for a solution.

The advocates had initially sought 20 acres of land for the court buildings. But, the acreage was reduced to 15 after the discussion between them and Mr. Kharge at the protest venue the last time. “Assuring us of a solution, Mr. Kharge had said that he would talk to Revenue Minister Kagodu Timmappa as five acres of land out of the 15 belonged to the Revenue Department. However, even after eight months of his assurance, the problem remains unsolved and land has not been allotted,” Itagi Mahipal Reddy, former president of the association, said.
