Lord Of The Rings might turn into a TV series

Amazon Studios and Warner Bros are in talks to turn LOTR into a television series.

If you are already lamenting the fact that Game Of Thrones is coming to an end, then there is good news waiting for you. Warner Bros. Television and the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien are in talks with Amazon Studios to make a television series on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. The CEO of Amazon studios, Jeff Bezos is personally involved in the negotiation but no official deal has been made by the studios and the estate of Tolkien, the Variety reports.

The news comes four months after Warner Bros. and the Tolkien estate settled an $80 million lawsuit after a five-year battle. The late author’s series was previously adapted for the big screen by director Peter Jackson in the form of three films, The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003). The last part of the franchise, The Return of the King went on to win 11 Oscars, including Best Picture. The three films focused on the journey of Frodo Baggins. All the three movies, made on a production budget of USD 281 million, grossed more USD 2 billion at global box office.

From 2012-2014, Peter Jackson returned with The Hobbit franchise (An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies) that was based on the journey of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman).

With Amazon planning to make a TV series out of Tolkien’s books, this could be a series that takes the legacy of Game of Thrones ahead. LOTR is already a popular franchise and with a TV show, the reach would be much wider than it already is.
