Weeks after two men were shot dead by four bike-borne assailants in different parts of northeast Delhi, police have arrested a man and his two associates in connection with the murders.

DCP (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad said the accused have been identified as Rashid alias Mumtaj, Rashid alias Golu and Waseem. “They allegedly killed Mohammad Wajid (35) and Mohammad Arif Hussain (23),” she said.

Initial investigation revealed that the arrested persons are allegedly part of wanted criminal Chennu Pehalwan’s gang. Police said the murders were a fallout of the gang rivalry between the Chennu and Nasir gangs in Seelampur.
A few months ago, Nasir’s men allegedly shot dead two of Chennu’s associates — one of whom was Mumtaj’s brother. Police suspect Wajid and Hussain were murdered in retaliation.

As first reported by The Indian Express, police suspect Wajid — a money lender and property dealer — provided financial support to Nasir. He was facing at least a dozen criminal cases. Police are yet to ascertain the reason behind Hussain’s murder.
