Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi began the last day of his Gujarat Navsarjan Yatra with a visit to the Veer Meghmaya temple in Patan. The temple houses a Dalit mythological figure who is believed to have sacrificed his life to remove untouchability.

He also visited the world famous stepwell — Ran ki Vav — in Patan.

Rahul Gandhi will proceed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s native district, Mehsana. He is scheduled to address a series of meetings along the way. The region is also the epicentre of Patidar quote agitation.

4:54 pm: Rahul Gandhi offers prayers at Bahuchara Ji Temple near Gujarat’s Mehsana. “Main Shiv ka bhakt hoon, sachaai mein believe karta hoon. BJP jo bhi bole main apni sachaai mein believe karta hu,” says Gandhi.

3.25 pm: When asked to rate the response he received from public in Gujarat during the current campaign, Rahul Gandhi said: “What you call response, I call it love. And I have been showered with it by the people of Gujarat and I am returning the love.”

3.00 pm: Reflecting on his Gujarat visit, Rahul Gandhi said his meeting with a girl suffering from thalassemia was his most memorable moment.

“My meeting with a young thalassemic girl weaving a sari was most memorable moment. I felt sorry for her, but at the same time liked her ‘jazba‘. We need to enable such persons,” he said.

1.30 pm: Rahul Gandhi visits the temple of Goddess Khodiyar in Varana village of Patan. Outside the temple, he purchased ‘chundabi’ and ‘prasad’ to offer before the diety.

12.30 pm: During his interaction with denotified tribes and their representatives in Harij of Patan in North Gujarat, Rahul Gandhi said Gujarat Congress’s manifesto will be decided after consulting Gujaratis.

Later, while watching a local “jadugar” (magician) performing tricks, Rahul Gandhi remarked that jadugars have been earning money by performing tricks and “Modiki” has also been doing the same in the last 22 years.

12.00 pm: Rahul Gandhi’s convoy was greeted by villagers of Harij in Patan district. The Congress VP broke security barricades to meet the villagers. Harj is the native village of Gujarat cabinet minister and OBC leader, Dilip Thakor.

11.10 am: On Sunday, Rahul Gandhi asked Congress supporters to stay away from making personal attacks at PM Modi and  “maintain the respect of the Prime Minister’s Office”. The Congress VP has, however, renewed his attack on PM Modi over the issues of GST, demonetisation and corruption.

11.05 am: After visiting the temple of Veer Meghmaya, Rahul Gandhi interacted with local leaders of Dalit community in Patan. The media, however, was denied access to the event.
