Mehrauli: Petrol pump owner shot at, robbed, bank employee takes him to hospital

A petrol pump owner was shot at by a gunman and robbed of more than Rs 13 lakh, which he was going to deposit at the Federal Bank near south Delhi’s Aurobindo College on Tuesday. Kamaljeet Sethi was on his way from his petrol pump in Mehrauli, and had reached the bank entrance when he was shot at. Police said Kamaljeet was shot at twice — with one bullet getting buried into the left side of his chest and the other missing him. He is said to be in critical condition at Max Hospital. The shooter is still at large.

Joint Commissioner of Police (southern range) Praveer Ranjan said, “No arrest has been made in the case, though some crucial leads have been found and police will be able to identify the suspect in the coming days.”
A senior police officer from the south district said, “Kamaljeet’s cashier, Babu Ram, used to deposit the money at the branch every morning. On the day of the incident, the cashier did not turn up for work, hence, Sethi had to deposit the money.”

Sethi had parked his Swift Dzire in front of the bank. CCTV footage taken from the bank showed the suspect, with his face covered, approaching from behind and attempting to snatch the bag. A struggle ensued and the gunman fired twice, injuring Sethi. An autorickshaw driver also tried to fight off the gunman, but retreated after he was assaulted with the butt of the pistol. After the gunman fled, the assistant manager of the bank, Sandhya Devi, rushed to help Sethi.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Devi said she came out of the bank on hearing gunshots and immediately recognised Sethi. “He is our customer… I tried to take him inside an autorickshaw, but then I saw the driver bleeding from his head. He was scared and said he cannot drive. So I took Sethi out of the vehicle,” she said.

Devi eventually managed to stop a passerby and take Sethi to a nursing home 200 metres away. “But they did not have facilities to treat a gunshot injury,” she said. In the meantime, police arrived at the spot and took him to Max Super Speciality Hospital.

“It appears that the suspects had done a recce of the bank and had planned the robbery. We are questioning bank employees and those who work at Sethi’s petrol pump,” the officer said.
