SIT probes insurance claims against hit-and-runs that never took place

In October, the counsel for ICICI Lombard General Insurance had, in the Delhi High Court, stated they had found that fake claims were being raised in the Detailed Accidental Reports (DARs), which were allegedly filed by the investigating officers in collusion with some people.

The matter was fixed for hearing on October 27, following which the court ordered Delhi Police to register a case under IPC sections 120-B and 420.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Alok Kumar told The Indian Express, “We have registered an FIR on November 14 and all the stakeholders involved will be questioned.”

Police sources said the names of six people have cropped up during investigation, among whom one is an advocate.
The Indian Express went through the case files of all “accidents” from 2011-16 and found that most of them were reported in the night in Outer Delhi. Two accidents were reported in Bawana, two in Narela and one case each was reported from Shahbad Dairy, Begumpur and Kanjhawala. The investigating officers, in their reports, have claimed that the accident victims were taken to a local hospital where the doctors had said the victims were in a “conscious condition”. Some had “simple injuries”, but were not able to record their statements.
