MGS Entertainment Show | Second day focused on competitive video game phenomenon

Han Zhihai, Secretary General of ChinaJoy Organising Committee delivers a talk at the MGS Summit

The focus for the second day of the 2017 MGS Entertainment Show and Summit was mobile video games and the esports phenomenon. Speakers explored the challenges and opportunities presented by mobile games, as well as the prospects for developing the esports industry in Macau. Esports – which has trained professional teams, multimillion-dollar prizes, stadiums filled to the brink, and with over millions of players worldwide — is seen by many as the brightest new star on the sports scene. In 2022, esports will become a medal event in the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Macau is no stranger to esports, having hosted the CEC China Esports Carnival and the Girlgamer Esports Festival this summer. These large-
scale esports events were the city’s first, but they surely will not be the last. Near the end of the second day of the summit, there was a signing ceremony between Sina Games and the Macau Esports Association.

The two organizations are teaming up to bring more esports tournaments to Macau, and this strategic partnership will utilize Macau’s extensive convention space and tourism infrastructure which will, as a result, increase the city’s participation in the new sport.

The MGS Entertainment Show and Summit is running until today. Originally focused on the gaming industry, the Macau Gaming Equipment Manufacturers Association (MGEMA) has expanded the scope of its main annual event to encompass the broad- based entertainment industry.

The event’s speakers come from a variety of backgrounds, including government regulators, industry consultancies, information technology giants, game  developers, advertising agencies, universities, VIP junkets and integrated resorts.

According to a press release issued by the organizers, “the summit’s aim is to bring together the perspectives decision makers need in order to understand the fast-changing entertainment industry.”
