GURGAON: Work on the Greater Southern Peripheral Road (GSPR) project, to connect Mehrauli in Delhi to IMT in Manesar, is likely to commence soon, as it is free from legal hurdles. Huda had started acquisition of land for the 40kmlong GSPR in 2016, but faced a challenge from a land owner.
Punjab and Haryana high court has vacated the stay on the acquisition, giving a fresh push to the road project.
According to a senior Huda official, the state government is now conducting a feasibility survey of the project.
“The initial survey had indicated the project was not viable due to high cost of land acquisition. That’s why, a fresh feasibility study is now being carried out, as per the transit oriented development (TOD) policy,” said the official, adding the government is exploring ways to make the project feasible.
With the stay vacated, Huda is planning to speed up land acquisition. PWD minister Rao Narbir Singh told TOI that he will meet with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and other concerned agencies to discuss ways and means of constructing the road for better connectivity. He also said the road will have the status of national highway.
The project is expected to facilitate smooth flow of traffic from Delhi to Manesar’s industrial area. For GSPR, about 395 acres of land in eight villages has to be acquired.
These villages include Aklimpur (5.95 acres), Tekliki (62.95 acres), Sakatpur (68.90 acres), Sikohour (15.92 acres), Naurangpur (49.40 acres), Bar Gujjar (99.13 acres), Nainwal (59.92 acres) and Manesar (33.15 acres).
At present, NH-8, also known as the Gurgaon-Jaipur expressway, is the only road connecting Delhi with Manesar’s industrial areas.

But it passes through Gurgaon, and owing to heavy traffic, commuters on this expressway regularly face huge traffic jams, which greatly increases the travel time. The road will be 90m-wide with a 30m-green belt on both sides. As per the plan, the land will be acquired by Huda and handed over to NHAI for construction.
There will be a gap of 2.5km between the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and GSPR. The construction of this road will benefit areas being developed under the Gurgaon extension plan (Sohna Development Plan).
The project was planned after industrialists requested the chief minister to provide better connectivity between Delhi and Manesar at the Happening Haryana Summit earlier this year.
Land acquisition is a major challenge for the project, because the compensation cost has gone up several times during the past few years. “In Shikohpur village alone, the compensation cost is around Rs 11 crore, where it should not have been more than Rs 5 crore,” said a senior official, pleading anonymity.
