The news that former Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale is bound for Australia to join the I’m A Celebrity camp has caused a fair bit of controversy in some circles.

But one person that doesn’t appear too phased by the news is Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – who’s given his support to Kezia as he spoke out on the ensuing row.

Despite new Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard suggesting she should be suspended for her stint in the jungle, Corbyn has said: ‘It’s her choice to go on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here.

‘I don’t think it’s appropriate to suspend someone from the part for doing that, that’s her choice.’

Kezia is reportedly due to fly out to Australia this weekend to join the likes of Amir Khan, Rebekah Vardy, Jennie McAlpine and Jamie Lomas in camp – but it’s already set tongues wagging in the Labour camp.

Labour MSP Jenny Marra said in a tweet that election in parliament was not ‘a shortcut to celebrity’.

But a source close to Kezia told The Sun that her appearance in the jungle could be a great opportunity to talk about politics.

‘What a fantastic opportunity for Kez to speak about politics and Labour values on one of the most popular and watched TV shows in the UK,’ they said.

‘Everyone in the party knows Kez worked tirelessly as leader, and held over 30 surgeries this year alone despite the pressure of being in the top job, and she has donated more than £20,000 to charity. ‘She’ll be back in time for the budget and will get straight down to work once again for the people of the Lothians.’

I’m A Celebrity kicks off on ITV on Sunday night at 9pm.
