SIVAGANGA: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, while participating in the birth centenary celebrations of former CM M G Ramachandran here on Saturday, said incidences of crime had come down during the six years of AIADMK rule.

The chief minister apart, the function held at Raja Doraisingam Government Arts College ground saw the participation of Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha M Thambidurai, Member of Parliament P R Senthilnathan, Minister for Health and Family Welfare C Vijaya Baskar, Minister for fisheries D Jayakumar, Minister for Cooperatives Sellur K Raju and several other ministers and MLAs.

Palaniswami who took a look at the specially-arranged photo exhibition on MGR, distributed welfare schemes worth `39.02 crore to 15,689 beneficiaries in the district.

Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha M Thambidurai during his address, said, “At a time when efforts are underway to convert Jayalalithaa’s residence into a memorial, things (I-T raid) that are going on there (Veda Nilayam) aches the heart.”

Speaking at the function, O Panneerselvam said, despite knowing that the Two Leaves symbol wouldn’t be theirs, “Some people, with no conscience have been lying around and cheating people. It is the loyals of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa who deserve to head the State and we, who learnt politics from her, will not succumb to any threat and will not bow down.”

Hitting out at the Opposition party, the Chief Minister said, “Unable to find any fault with the government in the last one year, they have been indulging themselves in repeated false propaganda stating that law and order are not being maintained in the State.

During the DMK regime, until 2010, 14,583 cases of murder, murder for gain, robbery and so on were registered. But during the six-year AIADMK regime, the number has come down to 12,128.”  Furthermore, he went on to add that more number of cases pertaining to crime against women were registered during the DMK regime while the number was low when Jayalalithaa was in power.
Road to development

Following the welfare-related demands pertaining to Sivaganga district, put forth by Minister for Khadi and Village Industries Board G Baskaran during the event, the chief minister announced the construction of a new bus stand for Tirupattur town panchayat, construction of five over bridges and four bridges in various parts of the district, promised advanced medical equipment to obstetrics and gynecology department at Government Sivagangai Medical College and Hospital, establishment of geriatric ward at the hospital, distribution of ‘tablets’ (Tab) to 275 nurses of Primary Health Centres in the district, expansion of pharmaceutical inventory, provision of advanced medical equipment like CT scan, dialysis and endoscope at the district headquarters hospital in Karaikudi.

Infrastructure facilities including the setting up of accident care unit will be provided. Renovation of the auditorium and open air theatre of Raja Doraisingam Government Arts College and construction of compound wall surrounding the college have also.

The chief minister also promised the construction of two reservoirs including one across Manimuthaaru and one check dam at Paalaaru. The CM also promised the construction of two sub stations and installation of two new transformers in the district.

EPS honours hospital team that performed south TN’s first heart transplantation

Madurai: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami who was in the city on Saturday felicitated the staff of Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) for performing South Tamil Nadu’s first heart transplantation. In an event held at the Circuit House, a team of 20 employees, including doctors and paramedical staff were congratulated by the chief minister. Minister for Health and Family Welfare C Vijaya Baskar, Minister for Cooperation Sellur K Raju, Minister for Revenue R B Udhayakumar and Collector Veera Raghava Rao werre present. The CM also met the family members of Soundarapandi on whom the heart was transplanted.
