INDORE: As chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced introduction of a chapter on the life of Rani Padmavati and reiterated his ban on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film on her, Dewas district saw a knee-jerk reaction from its education officer, who banned the use of film’s song ‘Ghoomar’ in school functions.
In a hurried bid to save face, Dewas district collector on Thursday ordered withdrawal of the order and shot a show-cause notice to the officer.

The fresh row started on Wednesday when Dewas district education officer (DEO) Rajiv Suryavanshi directed the principals and head masters of all government and private schools to refrain from using the film's song in cultural programmes.
He said in a circular, “Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena has submitted a letter regarding Maa Padmavati and requested that her honour and Hindu sentiments should not be offended by playing 'Ghoomar' song in the cultural programmes being organised in schools. So, do not use 'Ghoomar' song in the cultural programmes in schools.”
“It was wrong on his part to issue such orders. It is the state government special privilege to take such decisions. I have asked them to withdraw it and will be coming out with a rebuttal,” collector Asheesh Singh told reporters.
The collector has also issued a show-cause notice to the DEO and asked him to reply to it in three days.
The Ghoomar song in Bhansali’s movie featuring Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor had caught limelight after it was released as a teaser. Rajput community members had taken strong objections to it claiming that Rajput queens never danced in this manner in public. They also objected to the dress worn by Deepika in the song claiming that it was against the tradition.
The Dewas row about the movie came close on the heels of Chouhan banning the movie in Madhya Pradesh. He also announced plans to introduce a lesson on Rani Padmavati in schools, besides instituting an award in her name.
