KOCHI: Malappuram united to save a Tamilian's life in Kuwait and how!
In 2013, two co-workers in Kuwait quarreled with each other and the incident resulted in the death of one man. Afterwards, a Kuwait court awarded death sentence to Arjun Athimuthu, a Tamilian, for killing (though accidently) Abdul Wajid, hailing from Malappuram in Kerala.
As per Kuwait's law, Arjun can be released if the kin of the deceased pardon him.
They can ask blood money for that. So, Arjun's wife Malathi visited Abdul Wajid's family several times, pleading for forgiveness, in vain. However, Malathi was not ready to give up and she kept trying.
Since Abdul Wajid's wife and two kids are in a very poor state, without any income, the relatives agreed that if they get Rs 30 lakh, they were ready to forgive, hoping that this money would be helpful for the widow to raise the kids.
However, Rs 30 lakh was a huge amount for Malathi, who is a housemaid and lives with her daughter.
Kerala media reported about this and Munnawarali Thangal, the son of an IUML leader in Kerala, came to know about it.
He took initiative to collect money for this and asked Malathi to explain to him the situation. What followed was a wave of support for her that saw people of Malappuram together collecting Rs 25 lakh. On Monday, they handed over the amount to Malathi, who had arranged the rest Rs 5 lakh, on Monday.
