Students at Susitna Elementary can expect to head back to school Thursday after a waterline break caused classes to be canceled Wednesday.

A release from the Anchorage School District said most of school was "left unusable" following the line break. Eight classes were flooded because of the PVC pipe that failed overnight.

Some students, including bus riders, ASD said, had already arrived at the school. The district asked for parents to pick up their children as soon as possible.

"The team rallied and the whole group came together and were able to dismiss 400-plus students to their parent or guardian," said Courtney Forbes, the teacher in charge during the principal's absence.

By Wednesday afternoon, teachers were back in their classrooms cleaning up and getting ready for class to resume Thursday.

It was a disruption during the day but officials say it could have been a lot worse.

"We are fortunate that the break did not break in the ceiling. It's harder to mitigate that," said Rob Holland, the director of operations for the Anchorage School District.

Forbes said this incident was a good reminder that all parents should update their emergency contact information. "Some parents weren't able to be reached and it really shows how important it is for us to get a hold of you in case of an emergency."
